IBC - IT Director (July 1994 ¡V December 2000)
Reporting to MD, brief included European subsidiary operations and direction of corporate IT steering committee.
IBC - part of the Informa Group - specialise in direct marketing of Conferences and business to business Publications. They are a UK plc with offices in 15 other countries around the world.
Main challenges have been integration of systems and staff in a fast-changing environment of merger and acquisition, this has also necessitated significant change management as the company has grown from 350 staff in the UK to over 2000 in a five year period.
From a starting point of two locations the company now has 18 UK offices and I had to set these up from scratch including:
Structured Cabling
Air Conditioning
Fire & Security Alarms
Local Area Networks
Wide Area Network
Voice & Data
Fax Services
Internet Connections
Desktop PC¡¦s & Printers
Servers
Computer Room
Video Conference Facilities.
Call Centre
The rapid enlargement of the company bought about the need for changes in working practices as well as improvement in IT Services and these went hand in hand, in particular I improved productivity and job content by replacing cumbersome paper based systems with fully automated workflow applications.
IBC traditionally attracted customers via the Direct Mailing of Brochures but this was losing effectiveness, I was successful in implementing a new marketing strategy with the result that sales are now made through multiple channels i.e.

Email Marketing
Fax Marketing
Internet Marketing
Telemarketing
Direct Mail

The introduction of Document Imaging technology meant that it was possible to do away with hard copy filing and to make the movement of information between offices and customers much more efficient. The technology also incorporated a purchasing system whereby invoices were sent out for approval as Email attachments with a supporting Internet based application driving the approval process.
In order to help staff to accommodate and embrace the constant changes I set up an internal Training Function and personally headed up frequent Induction and Briefing sessions to explain what was going to happen and how they would be effected.
E-Commerce is a top priority - I headed a Group Project Team to implement the Open Market Transact and IPS software which is hosted in Cork. Local development utilised other E-Commerce tools such as JAVA, JAVA Script, ASP, XML and HTML. Some examples of applications developed in this area are:
Electronic Booking and Secure Payment for Conferences
Marketing of Conference and Publishing products
Distance Learning
Sponsorship & Exhibitions
Electronic Publishing
Browser Front End for Internal Systems
Documentation Sales
On-Line Subscription Sales

Other application areas included business-specific requirements as well as mainstream commercial applications such as accounting, office automation, and desktop productivity
All the core systems have been developed in Oracle Version 8 and Oracle Forms 6 running on Compaq servers under NT. The accounting systems are in the process of migrating to the Client Server version of the CODA Accounting packages with Business Objects employed as the reporting tool.
VB5 & VB6 were used extensively for the development of front-end interrogation and reporting tools to allow staff to have improved access to the Marketing Database. VB was also used for the development of a portable Delegate Registration System that was used at large Conference Events. C++ also used for the development of PC sub-systems.
The PC network uses Novell Netware and Microsoft NT together with TCPIP and ODBC. Communications hardware included CISCO, Bay & 3Com. Structured CAT5 100b Ethernet cabling with Fibre Backbone.
The PC environment encompasses Windows 2000, MS Office, Outlook & Exchange, plus Lotus Notes and Lotus Over Quota (Contact Management). Mac applications include Quark Express.
Also skilled in the use of MS Project for managing and reporting upon major projects.

Successful systems projects for which I was directly accountable included:
Delegate Registration (conference bookings, invoicing, joining instructions and credit control), E-Commerce Sites, Marketing Database (supporting direct marketing activities), Documentation Sales, Publishing Fulfilment.
Development of a Data Warehouse and Management Information System using Business Objects.
Development of smaller sub-systems such as speakers database, conference front & back office, warehousing and on-line enquiries.
Implementation of a PC Network for 1250 users over 15 locations, including Internet access and development of intranet site
Implementation of office automation product set including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Exchange and RightFax software.
Implementation of ISDX telephone systems on all sites including voice mail and call logging
Project managing the set-up of 12 new offices including all voice and data services
Development of a range of Workflow application using Lotus Notes
A Document Imaging project which optimised storage , retrieval and processing of hitherto paper based processes such as authorisation on invoices.

Implementation of a telesales and accounting system with supporting PC network for Marcus Bohn Associates (UK subsidiary)
