Joined the company as an Actuarial Assistant rising to Assistant Manager of Finance with responsibility for the team that prepared reserves on various UK & US bases, DTI Returns, Account Protection analyses & submissions to the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
Involved in most aspects of valuation, reporting & profitability analysis for a wide range of products & bases, including US GAAP.


Education

Institute of Actuaries exams passed: A to G & QQ. Only H & QF outstanding, both attempted previously.

Management: Recruited, trained, led, motivated & managed personnel with diverse skills using targeted training, management information systems & target setting linked to appraisals & bonuses to achieve specified goals, most notably processing c21000 Pension Review cases within 2 years to achieve the imposed Financial Services Authority (FSA) deadline (140 staff & consultants, including 70 from PwC).
Senior actuarial responsibility on Royal Liver’s (RLA’s) Pension Review Team, thus specified actuarial bases, methods & assumptions where discretionary. Sign-off responsibility for ex-gratia payments.
Project planning: Prepared Royal Liver’s project plans which were accepted by both RLA’s Board & the FSA without amendment.
Quality/Audits: Implemented quality control, cycles of internal & external audits, & operational performance evaluation resulting in improved efficiency, lower costs & a lower risk profile.
Procedure writing: Specified & reviewed procedures to be adopted by the department to maximise efficiency whilst ensuring consistency with both the word & spirit of FSA guidance.

Commercial & Financial
Contracts: Specified tenders, wrote & negotiated contracts worth over £8M with consultants, including PwC, Hazell Carr & Bacon and Woodrow. Worked with third party Managers, Directors, Partners & staff to ensure delivery of these contracts.
Budgets & Targets: Successfully managed a large department in a dynamic field to achieve goals within budget (annual budget over £12M, compensation budget over £60M).
Interpersonal
Negotiations: Successfully negotiated with senior regulatory staff on an ongoing basis & at meetings attended by RLA’s directors & advisers, success evidenced by the fact that RLA were one of the few companies NOT fined by the FSA under Phase 2 of the Pension Review.
Introduced service contracts between departments & negotiated with fellow Senior Managers to ensure quality support was provided to, & by, my team.
Prepared reports & letters to be sent to the FSA either directly or by the Customer Services Director or Chief Executive.
HR: Conducted appraisals, disciplinaries & dismissals. Interviewed candidates & performed quarterly departmental salary reviews using industry salary data.
