Elsevier is a world leading, multiple-media publisher of scientific, technical and health information products and services, with 7,000 employees in 73 locations around the globe.

In my current position I am responsible for (a.o.) the Global Sales & Marketing Organisation, by being the HR business partner for the Managing Director Global Academic & Government. I coordinate with my colleagues in the different parts of the world. (mainly USA, UK and Singapore). Start of 2006 I was responsible for a world wide reorganisation with implications in different parts of the world (but mainly in the US, UK and NL), which needed to be communicated with the HR community, as well as prepared for both the Dutch Work Council as well as the British Staff Council.

2001 till Oct 2004 HR Manager Excerpta Medica Medical Communications, subsidiary of Reed Elsevier (80 - 120 fte)

EMMC assists the Head Quarters of the Pharmaceutical Industry with the translation of their medical marketing strategy into medical communication strategy. To be able to deliver these services and products, EMMC employs highly educated and international personnel. In January 2004 EMMC merged with her sister company in the USA, with a Global Management Structure headed by a Managing Director in the USA.

As a member of the Global Management Team, I reported to the Global Managing Director. There was also a dotted line to the Senior HR Manager of Elsevier. As HR Manager of EMMC my responsibilities included:

* Translation of strategic decisions into Organisational and HR challenges, policies and solutions; providing the team with the relevant HR reports; control of Recruitment, Training and Temp budgets, Sick leave statistics
* Advisor of the MD with regards to the Works Council (OR), preparation of Advice or Consent Requests communication to the Company
* Management of the HR Department (two HR assistants), training and development of HR group
* Management of General Affairs Department (5 fte's)
* Advising all Department Heads, both in the Netherlands and in the USA,
* All general HR tasks such as Recruitment; New Employee Introduction Program; Training & Development; Reward issues; Exit procedures; Support with organisational questions; support during performance Review process
* Advising all staff concerning HR questions, difficulties with their Managers, during illness, career guidance, training & development etc
* During 6 months I was the interim Manager for the Single Sponsored Journal Department (6 fte) and the Corporate Communications Department (6 fte). After these 6 months, SSJ was incorporated into the American Journals Division, the CCM Department was dissolved.

1998 till 2000 HR Advisor, NV Organon, Business Unit of Akzo Nobel

NV Organon is the largest Business Unit of Akzo Nobel. Organon develops, produces and sells prescriptive drugs. The main therapeutic areas are Gynaecology, the Central Nervous System (e.g. anti depressants), Fertility and Cardio-Vascular.

1999 till Dec 2000 HR Advisor Marketing & Sales
In this position I was responsible for all HR work for approx. 350 employees; mainly Marketing, Medical and Sales staff. Responsibilities included:

1998 till 1999 Trainee HR Marketing & Sales
After completion of my thesis and work experience I was asked to join Organon as a trainee within the HR Department. This traineeship lasted four months. During this period I learned the basic skills and gained the knowledge (e.g. Labour Law, Interview skills, Job Ranking, Pensions etc). As trainee I was the HR advisor of one of the local companies of Organon - Nourypharma (approx. 100 employees).

1998 - Intern Human Resources
During seven months and together with the International Director Human Resources I researched the effectiveness and measurability of the 55 local companies of NV Organon in different parts of the world. It was our goal to translate Human Resources Management into Business Economical data. Based on the Human Investment Ratio we looked at the impact of different components on the success of a company. Components included for example the division of salaries into fixed and flexible components the average age of the employees, as well as the average length of service; the training and education budgets; the personnel turnover numbers. The results of this survey have been presented during a General Managers meeting and have been discussed with the individual General Managers. The outcome was also used to determine the short and long term HR action plans for the different local companies.
