Ø Thistle Hotels PLC Director of Training and Development 2001

Purpose:
Plan, develop and implement a training and management development strategy for the employees and management of Thistle Hotels Plc. The group consists of 56 four star properties based throughout the United Kingdom. (6500 employees)

Key achievements:
- Gained executive approval for the restructure of Thistle Hotels training department, replacing 9 hotel based trainers with 6 area training managers.
- Managed the tendering and negotiating process for a National, Modern Apprentice and NVQ contracts
- Managed the training budget of £800 000 and planned £100 000 for 2002
- Negotiated and managed national contracts for IT and Statutory Training.
- Designed and implemented a training infrastruture to ensure basic on job training was carried out across the group.
- Designed and facilitated Change Management workshops for hotel senior management teams
- Worked with finance team to set up accurate reporting process to monitor and quantify actual cost of training to the organisation
- Worked with IT company to produce CD Rom Induction programme for the group
- Evaluated Customer Service Scores and set up quality and quantity systems for measuring the impact of Service training on the business.
- Appointed and managed external consultants.


Ø Whitbread PLC Management Development & Training Manager 1999

Purpose:
Plan, develop and implement a training and management development strategy for the Restaurant Divisions Area Management Population. And project manage TGI Fridays management training .

Key achievements:
- Designed and project managed competency based development centres for senior regional management as part of “Individual Development Planning” process
- Developed an assessment and development centre for head and sous chefs for the Pelican group, a division of Whitbread
- Designed, delivered self awareness workshops for area management teams, resulting in improved team performance
- Developed and maintained a strategic link between the training and management development teams (reporting to separate HR Directors)
- Developed the training framework for unit based management training
- Managed external consultants delivering training to the business


Hilton Hotels U.K. Regional Training & Development Manager 1998

Purpose:
To provide a professional Training & Development service to individuals and teams throughout the northern region which contributed to the achievement of strategic business objectives.

Key achievements:
- Successfully re – established the training & development function in 4 units within the northern region.
- Designed and delivered Belbin team development workshops effectively improving team performance whilst saving each unit an initial £ 10 000
- Developed and implemented a training needs analysis, training nomination and evaluation process ensuring effective measurable use of training resources
- Facilitated activities of the management team thereby ensuring re - award of Investors in People

Provided an external Human Resource, Training and Development service to blue chip clients in South Africa.

Key Achievements:
- Developed an initial 7 month customer service contract into a 3 year management contract with the Southern Sun Group, who hold the license for Holiday Inns, Intercontinental Hotels and Southern Suns resorts, (60 hotels)
- Delivered and managed the 1 year Supervisory Development programme from recruitment of candidates through to graduation, for the Southern Sun group, for 3 consecutive years.
- Secured 1-year contract with fast food client to run Management Development and Service Enhancement Programmes
- Developed the skills of external and internal trainers on behalf of Southern Sun Group
- Secured freelance training delivery for Huthwaite Customer service and Behavioural Analysis programmes
- Secured freelance training delivery for Development Dimensions International, Communication and Management Skills programmes
- Secured freelance training delivery for Strategem, Business and Finance programmes
- Developed and delivered Appraisal skills training programme for the Senior Management team of Sandoz Chemicals.

Ø Shepstone & Wylie Attorneys Human Resource Manager 1990

Purpose:
Full Human Resource responsibility for 60 Professional and 140 office staff for the largest legal practise in Durban, South Africa

Key achievements:
- Produced and implemented Human Resource policies and procedures for the practise
- Influenced managing partners to purchase personality profile system for use in recruitment and problem solving
- Researched and completed feasibility study for new pay roll and computerised Human Resource package, which was successfully implemented
- Designed appraisal and reward systems gaining commitment for implementation
- Influenced management and staff in the implementation of a 5 year corporate wear programme, currently still in operation.

Ø Garlicks Department Store Human Resource Manager 1988

Purpose:
Full responsibility for Human Resource function for exclusive department store employing 200 staff. Executive team member.

Key Achievements:
- Prepared, managed and controlled R3 million salary budget
- Prepared and managed R250 000 staff welfare budget
- Managed HR team including training officer, secretary, personnel officer, wage clerk and management trainees
- Implemented Head Office initiated redundancy programme. Produced redeployment plans and counselled staff.
- Executive member being jointly responsible for promotions, marketing, administration and finance.
