Work Experience

I am British, and I have been living in Germany for over 20 years, I am fluent in German.

I have worked as the Group Procurement Director for a British based plc. in the building management systems industry. Key challenges were: Streamlining of the procurement structure, downsizing of staff, effective restructuring of procurement functions to meet the individual business needs, expanding on global procurement opportunities, implementation of Regional Sourcing Offices in Hong Kong, India and Malaysia, significant upgrading of personnel skills, and implementation of common performance measurement procedures. I had staff of 100 that were positioned in Europe, Asia and North America. Total spend amouned to 700 million Sterling.

I aslo have considerable knowledge in the Automotive industy as VP of Procurement for a global tier one automotive supplier The function encompassed global responsibility for 27 manufacturing sites in North and South America, Europe and Asia, and 180 purchasing staff. The position encompassed the full purchasing responsibility for four product lines. The annual purchasing volume was 1 billion US$. I reported directly to the EVP GM of the Electronics Division. During this time my primary focus was been the restructuring of the purchasing organization, and realignment of the purchasing processes against the company goals. I successfully introduced Sourcing Committees, expanded and enhanced global commodity management through supplier consolidation and reduction, determined a world class purchasing roadmap that defined the purchasing process, beginning with technology scanning through product introduction, commodity management and operational on-site purchasing. I introduced cost reduction models, and realigned the New Product Launch function to operate on a global basis. I moderated the global procurement Sourcing Committee that included Executive Management of Engineering, Quality, Operations and Logistics. Further activities include but were not limited to contract negotiations on executive management level, realigning supplier relationships and supplier management, resourcing, out-sourcing of products, and the implementation of global procurement agencies in China and the Czech Republic.

Another key element was the rigorous and professional development of purchasing staff. Together with Human Resources I introduced management reviews, competency models, career planing and career path programs, assessment centers, global assignments, goal setting procedures– global – cross functional and site level, and cross divisional purchasing networking sessions with purchasing high potentials.

Prior to working in the Automotive industry I worked 10 years in the PC and telecommunication industry, where I assumed both domestic and International assignments that encompassed operational and strategic responsibilities. These responsibilities, duties and functions over the years have allowed me to establish both operational and strategic expertise on a global basis.

I have many years of operational purchasing experience with South East Asian and European suppliers, and I am familiar with the cultural and business practices of these regions. Close cooperation with the development departments and integration of global procurement offices were an integral part of this business.

Between 1992 and 1996, I assumed a four year assignment in the United States both on the east and west coast. My responsibilities encompassed the management of Main User Councils, the strategic coordination and consolidation of material synergies between 14 operating companies, negotiation of Corporate Pricing Agreements, and the implementation of procurement tools such as process optimization of the procurement and material handling functions, supplier and pricing ranking. In addition to this, I managed a group of employees responsible for ongoing research of the procurement market in North America. During this time I was responsible for price and contract negotiations in excess of 1 billion US$ on behalf of the decentralized operating companies.

I have also spent several years in a Corporate purchasing function I was assigned a project defined by the Central Board with the objective of implementing and or professionalizing the purchasing organizations and processes within the purchasing organisations of numerous European countries. Another key objective of this project was to achieve additional, beyond budget cost savings of € 100 million through consolidation of European demand of direct materials and the implementation of regional purchasing offices for indirect materials. During this time, I managed a team of people who performed purchasing workshops designed to assess the degree of purchasing professionalism within the respective organizations, provide recommendations towards the implementation of organizational and operational strategies and implement the necessary improvements. The improvement processes were analyzed and derived though a recognized purchasing improvement methodology.

I assumed the position of Director of Purchasing for the telecommunication business of a global blue chip company with 40 employees and a purchasing volume of DM 1.3 billion. The production run rate was 10 million units a year. I had full responsibility for the purchasing functions in the main production Sites in Germany, USA and Spain. Purchasing incorporated the function Corporate Commodity and Marketing Managers that determined the global material synergies and negotiate pricing agreements for all production sites, and also Advanced Purchasing Engineering, an interface function between development and purchasing. During this time I was responsible for implementing a global supplier improvement program throughout all production facilities ( Germany, Spain and USA ). Further activities encompassed responsibilities pertaining to the Source Module of Supply Chain Management (Supply Line and Logistics Optimization ) Asset Management, Material Acquisition Costs and Material and Supplier Qualification.
