When I joined the company we were a wholly owned subsidiary of Amstrad Plc with a turnover of about £2m. In 1997 there was a Management Buy-Out, which involved the three directors and a Venture Capitalist. Over the next three years turnover has increased to £45m and the holding company formed to buy the shares in Dataflex Design was floated on the Stock Exchange in March 2000. In this time we bought other companies and it was part of my responsibility to merge their systems into our main accounting system and also manage the downturn in the business because of the difficulties experienced in the telecoms sector.


Other responsibilities have included
Production of monthly management accounts to a strict timetable including requirements of future cash requirements in both sterling and dollars.
Attendance at Board meeting both as Company Secretary and Finance representative of the subsidiary company.
Preparation of statutory accounts and working papers in preparation for auditors.
Liason with bankers, suppliers, customers, insurance companies etc. to minimise exposure to all risks including currency fluctuations.
Ensuring the correct numbers of staff are available as the company changed with adequate systems and training to cope with the change in the type of business and size.
Preparation of budgets and updated forecasts on a regular basis (at least monthly) including a review of estimated sales and orders for the rest of the Financial Year produced initially by the Sales Director.
Identifying cost savings in all departments to reduce the cost base from £650k per month to £400k per month to match the reductions in revenues and assisting the Managing Director in the implementation thereof.
Conversion of accounts system from Pegasus to Sage and recently the implementation of a new costing system that can give much more detailed information.
Making proposals to the Board in various areas
Credit control, ensuring all debts are either insured, or the management are fully aware of the amounts at risk.
Supervision of payroll, which increased from 13 to around 110 and then reduced to around 40.
Supervision of cash book and purchase ledger functions
Setting up companies in Brazil and Hong Kong.
