Co-wrote new, no-growth/low-growth business plan, addressed significant creditor management issues.

Issues: Non-core subsidiary (Vejle Margarinfabrik) in Vejle, Denmark reported operating losses of about £90k/month; inadequate/inconsistent explanations from management team; weak FD; systems launch delays/cost overruns; operational launch problems particularly with quality of new, organic products.
Built new gross margin and pricing analysis models for key product/customer groupings.
Revived spending on systems, linking operational to financial elements and prioritising data integrity.
Shadowed FD (in mix of English/Danish), helped cut operating losses to breakeven within 4 months.

Issues: Had client with funds wanting to buy profitable, 2nd tier automotive component supply manufacturer in Britain with significant market share; needed fast introduction to willing seller.
Found suitable group of companies, meeting most of the target criteria within 7 days.

Issues: FD of major subsidiary (Kameva) in Karlstadt, Sweden resigned suddenly; needed an FD with Swedish language capability to fill gap while long-term replacement was found.

Issues: Decentralised accounting was inefficient and poorly controlled; wanted to create a shared service centre in a single location, and plan transition.

1996-98 Group Finance Director, THE BOUGHTON GROUP, Amersham
Sales from £29m to £25m: PBT from £ 4m loss cut to £500,000 loss
Appointed to a 100-year-old diverse family group of companies manufacturing and engineering vehicles for specialist and military applications. It lacked basic disciplines and procedures, had inadequate control over loss-making subsidiaries and joint ventures and had operated for a year without a Finance Director since removing the previous incumbent.
Identified major weaknesses in stock control (£ 400,000 stock discrepancy), cash control (ineffective credit control and debt collection), accounting processes (35-day monthly accounts cycle!).
Closed joint venture with dishonest management; stopped cash draining from loss-making operations.
Represented Group in negotiating re-financing plans with bankers (including new equity injection).
Played key role in planned acquisitions and disposals/closures.
Restructured the finance function, recruited new, qualified staff and recommended new IT systems.

Sales from £29m to £50m: PBT from £ 6m loss to £ 1m profit
Seconded by Ford to address fundamental weaknesses in financial and business management and control. A delayed new model launch had coincided with a dramatic recession in the luxury sports car market and the parent company wanted to know quickly what options it had.
Prepared new business plan. Identified and introduced operating efficiencies, arranged disposal of surplus properties and acted as interim MD for 6 months, negotiated re-financing by parent company..
Co-developed new, high-profile product programme (Aston Martin DB7); supervised its execution within world-class timing; recruited experienced staff for key functions in new DB7 plant.
Controlled annual spend exceeding £ 50m, eliminated buffer stocks and cut inventory by 20%, and reduced finance, purchase and materials control headcount by 25%.
