Work Experience

July 2002 – date – Ltd. Chairman

Founded own company, to provide the correct vehicle for interim, consultancy and training activities. Major assignments completed include –

• CORUS plc.
Task – Initiate business with three major German manufacturers, named by the client, to achieve a target first year sales turnover of €9M. Projected first year turnover against firm contracts was €11.5M at cessation of task. Developed the strategy for ongoing business after year one, to be implemented by others.
• Scottish SME. (not named due to confidentiality agreement)
Task - Resolve acute cash flow difficulty caused by dispute with major plc client. Achieved an acceptable settlement partially by negotiation and partly via legal redress, within a demanding and short timeframe.
• CORUS plc.
Task – Develop and implement a robust delivery process route to European engineering companies. Improve on time delivery performance to agreed service levels. On time delivery performance was improved.
• Universal Steels Ltd.
Task – Work with the board in preparing strategic market research
and detailed business plan for presentation to banks and government offices, to establish a large manufacturing facility. Presented such plans and negotiated with potential investors. Presented the development of the facility at public meetings, answering questions from the floor.

August 1999 – April 2002 Project Metals Ltd. Managing Director

Project Metals Ltd. was the UK sales and project management division of the Salzgitter AG group. The Salzgitter group was Germany’s second largest steel group, employing 22,800 people worldwide. The company manufactures a comprehensive range of steel products.

• Negotiated the sale of RW Project Metals Ltd. to the Salzgitter AG group to provide the strategic platform for future company development.
• Integrated the product portfolio and systems of the German parent group into the company.
• Lead the team which negotiated the largest single contract won by the company, valued at £7.65M.
• Developed and implemented a commercial strategy for Mannesmann Röhrenwerke structural products in the UK, after the acquisition of Mannesmann Röhrenwerke by Salzgitter AG from Vodafone.

January 1995 - August 1999 RW plc. Director/General Manager of
Two Group Companies

RW plc was the UK’s second largest steel processing group, with a yearly turnover in excess of £130M. It owned a chain of eight processing and steel distribution companies with twenty two sites throughout the UK and Ireland.

• Identified a new market for the group, founded RW Project Metals Ltd. in January 1997 to enter this market.
• RW Project Metals Ltd. achieved over budget turnover and profitability.
• Worked as senior part of the management team assigned to identify and implement necessary change to turnaround James & Tatton Ltd, a loss making group company. The company was successfully returned to profitability after 14 months.

March 1986 – December 1994 Murray International Metals Ltd.

• Joined the company as trainee salesman, progressed to senior sales executive.
• Lead negotiator in several large projects in the offshore oil & gas market.
