Inchcape plc is the world’s largest independent motor distributor. It has a key presence in six regions globally, representing many of the major car manufacturers. Its UK businesses are divided into Retail, Financial Services, e-Commerce and Business Services.

Managing Director, Seaking Automotive Ltd

The UK Business Services division comprised Seaking Automotive Ltd, a wholly owned Inchcape subsidiary providing car import handling and technical enhancement services to automotive manufacturers and distributors. The business employed circa 600 people, had a turnover of £25m and handled 300,000 cars in 1999, being 15% of the new car market. Reporting to Chief Executive, Inchcape UK, took ultimate responsibility for all aspects of this ailing business which required a significant overhaul following a previous run of terminated contracts.

Strategic challenge:
 Refocused the business onto higher margin, added value services.
Culture change:
 Drove the shift from old, traditional motor trader to a modern, contract services business.
 Replaced most of the management population with experienced, business services professionals.
Client development:
 Rebuilt the previously destroyed confidence of our clients.
 Renewed remaining contracts, and added to the client base.

• Promoted in May 2000 to lead the newly formed UK Business Services division.

July 1994 to April 1999: HAYS PLC
Hays plc is a business services group and a FTSE Top 100 company, growing at more than 20% per annum throughout the 1990’s. Each of the distribution, personnel and commercial divisions provides high quality services with high added value content and has built an enviable client portfolio.
Director – Electronics Sector, Hays Distribution

Managed the start-up of this new sector for Hays which consisted of several contracts in UK and Europe that provided warehousing, distribution and technical support services to manufacturing, distribution and retail facilities. Developed the strategy of the sector, managed the operations and profitability of one of the most profitable sectors within Hays:

Compaq: Key Skills Deployed:
Logistics analysis – defined the optimum solution for the client, and determined how Hays could support the solution.
Business development (Europe) – managed the Hays proposal to win new contract.
Contract negotiation – negotiated the contract from start up, and negotiated renewal.
Start-up – sourced a brown-field site, designed the operations, completed system and operational specifications, recruited all new staff, managed financial and legal aspects of a new company start-up.
Sony: Key Skills Deployed:
Business Development – managed the Hays proposal to win new contract.
Contract negotiation – negotiated the new contract.
Business development (Europe) – negotiated further alternative services across Europe.
Fujitsu: Key Skills Deployed:
Contract negotiation – negotiated this complex contract for services and leases.
TUPE transfer – managed the transfer in of existing employees.
Start-up – worked the difficult culture change from Fujitsu to Hays employees.

• Earned a rare Hays Business Performance Award which recognised my personal achievements in building the new electronics sector.

Sept 1992 to July 1994: LOGISTICS DEVELOPMENT

Senior Consultant
Developed new business through a range of networks and cold calls. Managed all warehouse/distribution assignments personally, while employing associates for other assignments.

Thorntons
Designed operational and physical layout changes to this fast moving consumer goods business that negated the need to move to a new site.
Norbain
Planned, designed and project managed the relocation of a distribution centre to a brown-field site.
NHS
Undertook a strategic review of the NHS Supplies operations in the North Thames Anglia region.

July 1988 to Sept 1992: LEX PLC – Volvo Car UK Ltd
Volvo Car UK Ltd operated the concession for the import, distribution and aftersales support of Volvo cars.

1990 to 1992 Business Systems Manager
1988 to 1990 Parts Distribution Manager

The site at Crick, Northants, was a 250,000 ft2 warehouse which stocked 50,000 unique spare parts and supplied the UK dealer network. As Parts Distribution Manager, managed the team of 80 unionised warehouse operators, and a £2m sub contracted transport operation. Following this, as Business Systems Manager ran the site’s operational systems and IT development function.

Culture change:
Negotiated and implemented a new salaried style payment system for weekly paid unionised employees which capped earnings and introduced a quality focus.

1980 to July 1988: GLAXO PLC - Vestric Ltd
The largest pharmaceutical wholesale business in the UK, operating in a fast moving, customer responsive marketplace.

1985 to 1988 Branch Manager, Bexhill

Worked through a management training programme to subsequently manage the operations and profitability of Bexhill branch. One of 30 branches nationwide, employed 60 staff and delivered urgent pharmaceutical orders twice daily to retail chemists and hospitals in Kent and Sussex.

Business and profit growth:
Earned the 1987 branch award for the greatest increases over the previous year in sales (22%) and profits (41%).
