Managing the large-scale clinical trials and commercial manufacturing facility. Recruited to run new business area. Various dosage forms. Responsible for all factory functions: manufacturing, packaging, warehouse, materials management, quality control. Grew from 25 to 40 staff in 12 months. £3m sales.

Operations Manager (1995 1999)

Established the requirements for a £32m new facility producing new products, incorporating full warehouse facilities. Bringing facility to operational status.

· Set manufacturing standards for facility and equipment design to contemporary industry standards utilising the principles of lean production, building in flexibility. Improved raw material conversion rate from 75% to 95%, introducing automated control systems.
· Established multifunctional operating roles. Implemented training to support transfer to production.
· Managed validation exercises and established plant readiness for successful inspection by regulatory authorities (MCA and FDA standard internal inspection).
· Utilised effective teamworking skills to overcome silo mentality of functional groups on project team (engineering, development and QA) and achieve agreement on many contentious issues.

Production Manager (1992 to 1995)

Headhunted to manage 120 strong department responsible for £300m sales in turnaround situation. 18 million units per annum. £3m operating budget. £25m materials usage. 500 sku’s.

· Improved high-speed packing line outputs by 25-50% to achieve rated performance by resolving long term operational issues. Introduced revised line layouts and semi-automation for hand packing. Reduced headcount to 80.
· Introduced statistical process control and relevant in-process control procedures to manufacturing, filling and packing processes.
· Managed culture change to a customer focused unit where individuals accepted responsibility.
· Established effective teamworking with engineering, technical, QA and materials management to identify, prioritise and schedule improvement activity.

Promoted to manage new production area with novel blister packaging processing equipment. 30 staff, blend, fill and pack process.

· Improved equipment reliability to achieve output increase from 40% of rated output to 90%.
· Introduced new machinery to support product growth rate of 100% and new market launches.
· Developed teamworking between operations, technical, QA and engineering staff.
· Reduced product cost to 30% through downtime improvements and quality improvements.
