Work Experience

Current Position. Since moving to Dorset in 1997 I have successfully set up Hime Trading & Associates. This is involved with both Management Consultancy and trading within the UK, India, and Vietnam. Initially I was assisting in setting up the importation of cut flowers from India into London and Manchester and Essential oils into London from Vietnam.

For the last 18 months I have been working as a management consultant firstly advising Arab World Ministries on a strategic and management review. This has resulted in the appointment of a new Chief Executive and the restructuring of the organisation including the day to day management of the permanent staff together with the responsibility of the Board and Chairman.

Since April 2000 as a management consultant I have taken on the part time role of project manager for the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge. Founded in 1698 the SPCK is the oldest book publisher after Oxford and Cambridge. I am responsible for setting up their Online Bookshop. A fascinating assignment. It was launched on time at the end of February 2001. I am still involved in the management and marketing of the site.

Day rates and assignment location. Day rate £750, less for non-profit making sector. Outside UK £1,000. Rates and location normally any where but dependent upon duration of assignment.

I was asked to review a major PLC’s Trade Mark Diversification policy and subsequently to set up an organisation and develop people and systems to achieve the company objectives. This we successfully did. I was personally responsible for negotiating and set up Licensing and Joint Venture Agreements in: - India. Instant Coffee, Manufacture and Distribution. China. CD- ROM’s, Pagers, Mobile Phones, Phone Cards,
Male Fashion. Vietnam. CD-ROM’s, Clothing Accessories and Men’s Shirts. Japan. Male Fashion and Accessories Italy. Male Fashion and Mobile Phones. Belgium. Palm Top Computers, Electronic Organisers.T/O £60m Reported to Divisional Managing Director

1993-1995 DINE-A-MITE.
Asked to join as Chief Executive, a new national charity, developed by the hospitality industry, the Dine-a-Mite Trust. I was head hunted to join this organisation with the twin objective of raising money for the homeless and hungry and creating a more positive focus on our industry. On a single evening we raised in its first year £770,000. This entailed the co-ordination and structuring of a national network throughout the U.K. of over six thousand hotels, restaurants and pubs. Most of the principal PLC's were involved. I was responsible for setting up the organisation from scratch, negotiating the companies’ participation at main board level. My role also entailed, creating the database and developing both the business and marketing plan together with the appropriate budgets.

1987 - 1993 THE RODSTOCK GROUP T/O £30m
Chairman of Denley Court Hotels. I joined this group with stock options, and a wish to build up my capital base I took control of 2 unprofitable hotels with a turnover of £2.7 m. The plan was to develop a collection of hotels based in the North West. In the first year sales were static but profits increased by 216%. In year 3 sales increased by 19% and profits by 87%. In June 1990 opened a new development of 32 bedrooms, Courts Pub and Cafe Bar, Leisure Club and 3 new meeting rooms. Sales increased by 29%. Profit in year 4 was in excess of 4 times the 1987 results, even set against disruption to sales caused by the development. Reported to Group Chairman.

1983 - 1987 HIME WARD, Chairman
I set up this company to provide consultancy to major groups: Allied Lyons Plc, Allied Bakeries Plc, Mecca Plc, Nuffield Hospitals, J.A.Devonish Plc, Greenall Whitley plc, etc. Fee Income £173,000 p.a.

1981 - 1983 J. LYONS CATERING LIMITED Managing Director
Turnover £100m. (150 outlets). Within two years reduced the company loss by £1m after interest and before sales of assets. On target for break-even in 1984. Restructured the company. Seventeen new projects completed within 16 months. New airport contract won and another renewed. Two other major contracts awarded. Head office costs reduced by 31%, 37 new menus and accompanying specifications introduced. Five-year strategy accepted by main Board. Profit increased by £961k (62%) in two years. I was Chairman of the companies in this group that Company was the appointed caterer to H.M. the Queen and other senior members of the Royal family. Reported to Deputy Group Chairman.

1977 - 1981 CENTRE HOTELS PLC Director of Operations
This was one of the largest hotel chains in the U.K. (4,600 bedrooms). I reported to the Chairman and Managing Director for the day to day running of the Company. Had direct line responsibility for marketing, sales, purchasing and personnel. Profit increased from 21% to 32% during a recession. T/O £36m.Reported to Managing Director.


1973 - 1977 GRAND METROPLITAN PLC Berni Inns Ltd. Regional Director
Head hunted to set up the 4th regional company within the group. Exceeded annually sales and profit budgets. Introduced new training courses. Set up new marketing strategy. Created staff newspaper and Manager of the Year award. My first experience of running a junior board team and being instrumental in creating a company culture.T/O £3m. Reported to Operations Director

1970 - 1973 STAKIS HOTELS PLC Hotels Director
Head hunted to restructure the hotel organisation and improve the quality of the food and beverage operations. Opened 4 new hotels in one year; all hotels achieved their sales and profit forecasts. Reported to Operations Director.


1962 - 1970 FORTE PLC

Numerous operational posts including Senior Marketing Executive and the first UK Sales Manager for Forte Hotels. I set up, trained and recruited all the hotel based sales executives.

I read a lot, with a particular interest in the European theatre of the 2nd World War. I love all types of classical music particularly Opera and traditional Jazz. I enjoy meeting people within our Church and elsewhere. I like Real Ale at my local, the Hope and Anchor, as well as wine. Walking our dog Molly along the Dorset coast and in North Yorkshire.
