Essent Lighting, Maasbracht (Daughter Company of Essent, a Major Dutch Multi-Utility Group).

Interim Manager, responsible to advise the Management Team on strategic, financial and legal matters w.r.t. a commercial sensitive contract between Essent and the Dutch Government and to coach the Project team in the execution of the project. The contract had initially great challenges to comply with the ongoing changes of the “client wishes”. These challenges were overcome by streamlining the business processes within the project team and the interaction with the client.

Result : My task was ended by the time the necessary project changes were in place and had proven their effect.


1996-2002
Dutch Ministry of Transport, Zoetermeer.
Head of Projects Department, ultimate responsible for heading the Department of Motorway Traffic Management Systems. This Department consisted of approx. 24 staff (B.Sc, PhD level and supportive admin) and I was “line” responsible for all Department personnel and “account” responsible for 35-45 engineering and/or construction contracts. The average annual Department contracting budget varied over the years between € 100- € 150 million.

Sr. Project Manager, ultimate responsible for 6 contracts, to build Motorway Traffic Management Systems on the Dutch roads. Each contract valued between € 10-25 million per contract. Projects were co-ordinated by a project team of approx 6 staff (BSc., PhD. level) who directly reported to me, whereas I reported directly to the Head of the Project Department.
My main task was to lead the project team and manage the initialisation and execution of contracts, interacting with various parties involved, such as local and regional governments, contractors and other third parties. In detail I was responsible for the set-up of contract definitions, planning, budget control and quality of the ultimate product.

Result : Projects have been handed over in time, within budget and to the required quality level to the various clients.


1995-1996
Hadek, Rotterdam (Industrial Trading Company).
Project Manager on a short term contract, ultimately responsible for new construction and maintenance of 2 projects (approx. € 2 mil), as well as in former East Germany as in the Netherlands. Projects consisted of multi discipline work, such as mechanical, civil, electrical, instrumentation and coating application. Clients were major electric power companies in Europe. 4 staff reported directly to me and indirect approx. 20 tot 30 staff. Furthermore I was involved in the development of a strategy development to expand the business of this small sized company.

Result : Projects have contributed to the further development and expansion of this company.


1989-1995
Petroleum Development Oman (Shell-Oman), Muscat, Oman.
Senior project engineer within an onshore project team of 8 engineers, on a turnkey project, “Crude Stabilisaton Project” (US$ 80 mill.), reporting to the project manager. Responsible for mechanical engineering, quality management and setting up contracts with and responsible for follow up of contracts with third parties in Oman, Europe, USA, Singapore and India.

Result : A successful project, which has been used to further improve the project definition and execution of other future projects within PDO


Projectleader of a successful multi-functional business improvement project on engineering / procurement. I had the ultimate responsibility for managing the project team in order to achieve the proposed changes and targets as directed by the senior Management team. Secure planning, co-ordination within all levels of the organisation and control of progress were the most challenging tasks within this project. The team consisted of staff with various European en Asian nationalities, disciplines and levels of the organisation and I reported directly to the Business Unit Director.

Result : The project gained under my responsibility a bronze award in a worldwide Shell competition of business improvement projects in 1992

Head of Quality Assurance for North Oman. Being responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the overall quality management (in acc with ISO 9001) of North Oman. I reported directly to the Engineering Manager.

Result : QA has been further implemented at all levels, a.o. with the implementation of an audit scheme.

1982-1989
Shell Internationale Petroleum Mij, The Hague.
Senior engineer, responsible for all technical and contractual matters on procurement contracts placed on behalf of various Shell Operating Companies, especially in the Far East. Leading international audits, performing contract negotiations and technical discussions with third parties in the Far East and Europe.

Project engineer within a project team of approx. 25 engineers, to design and construct the Al Jubail refinery complex in Saudi Arabia (US$ 1.500 Mil.). Responsible for the development of technical contract specifications, international negotiations with equipment fabricators, especially in Italy, France and Singapore.
