6/00 to 4/01 Corporate Vice-President Custom IC Product Line. P&L manager for the custom IC product line, Cadence’s largest.
• Managed $250M/year business, 400 people
• Produced best bookings quarter ever in Q4/00 at over $100M
• Coped with all 3 engineering managers departing for Internet startups in September 2000
• Managed startup of Superchip project; delivered first 2 phases on schedule

9/98 to 9/99 Vice-President Engineering. Ran engineering of a startup company in synthesis competing frontally against Synopsys.
• Grew group from 10 to 25 people
• Successfully launched 2nd and 3rd versions of the product (BuildGates)
• Managed engineering of next-generation product, PKS, later shipped by Cadence
• Revenue built up from essentially zero to over $10M during this period
• Ambit was acquired by Cadence for nearly $300M

1982 to 1998 VLSI Technology and Compass Design Automation; San Jose, California and Sophia-Antipolis, France
12/97 to 9/98 President, Compass Design Automation.
• Took over as President at 24 hours notice and ran a $55M 300 person EDA company (a subsidiary of VLSI Technology)
• Produced 3 quarters of sequentially increasing revenue following 5 quarters of sequentially declining revenue
• Worked with bankers to orchestrate a road show and arranged for Compass to be acquired by Avant!
8/96 to 12/97 Vice-President, Strategic Programs (communications), VLSI, San Jose. Responsible for strategic programs in VLSI’s communication business, including M&A, technology licensing etc.
• Licensed CDMA technology from Qualcomm on very favorable terms
• Re-negotiated the microprocessor license with ARM and royalty buyout with Symbionics
• Acquired a French communications design company Comatlas
• Drove strategic planning in communications business
1/92 to 8/96 Vice-President, Product Operations, Compass, San Jose. Returned to U.S. and ran initially all engineering but eventually all engineering and product marketing.
• Responsible for 240 people
• Compass revenue grew from $25M to nearly $58M in this period
• Created two outsourcing programs in Moscow and Hyderabad, India to support legacy code
• Responsible for programs in almost all areas of EDA
• Delivered Pathfinder next generation place & route and Passport libraries to market
12/90 to 12/91 Vice-President, European Operations, Compass, France. Responsible for all operations in Europe including sales, marketing, support and engineering when Compass was spun out of VLSI.
• Created a 20 person European sales and FAE force for Compass
• Compass Europe grew from $11M to $14M in the period
12/86 to 12/90 Manager, European R&D, VLSI, Sophia-Antipolis, France. Created from scratch a European R&D presence for VLSI Technology.
• Hired the initial team, selected site, won senior management approval
• Relocated to France
• Grew the group to over 30 people from 15 different nationalities in this period.
• Projects in synthesis, library development, DSP, high-level design.
6/82 to 12/86 VLSI Technology. Various engineering positions initially as a programmer and later as a project manager.
• Created VLSI’s circuit extractor, part of the DRC, the DesignAssistant
• Personally created all of the data management, and managed all of the graphics, that underlay VLSI’s tools for another 10 years.
