Work Experience

February 1995 till October 1995, Planet Internet
In 1995 I started working as a supervisor for the Planet Internet service desk. Main focus for this period was the setup and operation of the Planet Internet Service desk. After having done this for about three months it became apparent that the subscriber management system with which Planet Internet started out was not up to the task. From that point onwards I joined the Cap Gemini software development team responsible for the creation of a whole new customer care and billing system to give input on a functional level from a service desk point of view.

October 1995 till June 1996, Planet Internet Holding
In October 1995 Planet Internet Holding was founded and I was asked to join them. The job description was on the more technical side dealing with the Powerbuilder environment and the Sybase RDBMS that Cap Gemini had used to build the platform. In this period Planet Internet Holding set up the Planet Internet UK operation and I was involved in both the development and implementation side of this project. New people were brought in to further develop the platform.

June 1996 till June 1997, Planet Internet Holding
From January 1996 I shifted from the more technical side of projects to the project management side of the projects. In October the rather comprehensive project of Planet Internet Belgium started. With a team of people then called “Core Development Team”, which I lead, we made an inventory on all the necessary changes to the system and build, tested and implemented these changes in the Belgium code base with which we launched February 14th 1997.

A similar implementation was done for Telekom Slovenia. More specific a business unit of TS called “Slovenia Online” (SiOL). This Slovenian ISP had obtained some 10.000 users and ran into problems with their back office operations. The “Core Development Team” was responsible for the project from intake of requirements to coding, testing and finally assisting in the implementation and training the staff. At the beginning of 1997 Planet Internet Holding was changing from a project driven business to a product driven operation. I was very much involved in this whole process of re-shaping departments and became the manager of the Professional Services department.

June 1997 till May 1998, the new planet (former Planet Internet Holding)
During this period I was responsible for the ongoing restructuring of Planet Internet Holding. The company also found a new shareholder within this period being Unisource Business Networks. The major project for this period was the setup of PTT Telecom “Het Net”. The back office systems were going to be the WorldEye platform by Planet Internet Holding. Here I did most of the project management and started with the account management of this new customer. The Professional Services department consisted of six people. Planet Internet Holding changed their name to “the new planet”.

During this period we developed a product called Regedoc®. This product made it possible to transfer documents via the Internet securely for large corporations.

Last assignment at the new planet
Setting up the so-called Service Delivery Centers. These deliver a service to a specific vertical market by making use of Internet technology. I was working on the description of the requirements for the service, a definition of such a company and a project plan to come to the set-up of these Service Delivery Centers.

BLUEPRINT CONSULTING

February 1st 1999 till November 1st 2001
Within this period I was director of Blueprint Consulting. Blueprint Consulting was a company employing 34 people. We focus on consultancy, project management and development related to the implementation of Customer Management and Billing systems in the wireless, wire line and internet service market. Furthermore the company developed so-called Internet Starterkits that were used by consumers to configure their PC’s for Internet usage.

Every director at Blueprint Consulting needed to work externally for the company in order to keep a good feel with the market as well as having his role internally within the company. Therefore following you find an overview of my external projects and internal roles performed at Blueprint Consulting.


External projects for Blueprint Consulting

1999 Planet Internet NV
With a 150.000 people subscriber base Planet Internet NV needed a new platform. Blueprint Consulting was the right party for Planet Internet NV. I did all of the project management in order to come to a successful implementation of Portal Infranet. This was a highly complicated project including a migration path from the old customer management system to Infranet. It also included several newly build modules. One, a new customer registration module with a security mechanism based on the old system and backwards compatible with that system. Secondly, an interface to an accounting system “AXI”. thirdly, a dealer commissioning system based on the former system with enhancements.

1999-2000 InterXion BV
At InterXion I performed a similar project as with Planet Internet NV. However this was implemented with a product by a company named “Paradigm” which is based in the UK. My input in the project was mainly the project management for the implementation of the new system. On the side I did some consultancy for the implementation based on my experience with these types of systems. Furthermore, I coached some people new at their specific task (testing, maintenance) within the project.

2000/2001 Planet Media Group
The project at Planet Media Group consisted mostly of consultancy on the implementation of Portal’s Customer Management and billing system Infranet. First we did a green field implementation for their new service called “Disney Blast”. Secondly we started with a step by step approach in order to come to the implementation of Infranet. Planet Media Group is an Internet Provider with a 600.000 subscriber base and thus quite a complex implementation. These types of providers commonly have several subsystems running the operations. These needed to be replaced by Infranet. This is another factor of complexity. Several modules were build to replace the old system.


Internal projects for Blueprint Consulting

Internally within Blueprint Consulting I have been responsible for the operations group (22 people) as a line manager. Furthermore I have been overseeing the financials and legal position of the company and was involved in sales.

Line manager responsibilities
Being the manager for the group of 22 developers, consultants and project managers it is of great importance to keep in touch with everyone. I did this on the basis of informal discussions and formal evaluation meetings. Furthermore Blueprint Consulting has been a fast growing company thus a lot of interviews with potential candidates.

Development procedures
Implementation of the guidelines for the developers of Blueprint Consulting. This was needed in order to come to the best possible software for our customers. The procedures are shared throughout the Blueprint developer community and constantly improved.

Project Management procedures
Implementation of the project managers guidelines specifically for implementations in the field of Customer Management and Billing systems. To come to a standardized way of implementing large software projects/platforms these procedures were needed. At this point in time the procedures are finished and brought to the operation.

Implementation of support and maintenance department at Blueprint Consulting
After growing the company substantially a support department for Blueprint was needed in order to help our customers. I set up this department together with a group of people and it became operational in June 2001. The support team was itself supported by a Lotus Notes Intranet system holding all customer contacts and problems in need of resolution.


Legal and finance responsibilities

Implementation of new accounting package (Accountview)
Starting from July 2000 I’ve been responsible for streamlining the finance department. First analyzing all procedures needed within Blueprint Consulting in order to support the growth anticipated. After that we implemented a new system called Accountview. The implementation project took two months to complete.

Business planning
Blueprint has grown from 4 partners at the start of 1999 to a company of 34. This growth rate requires thorough planning and monitoring of the growth process. I developed the process for Blueprint Consulting for doing P&L based planning and a cash flow planning tool both developed in Excel.

Restructuring of Blueprint Consulting VOF to Blueprint Consulting BV;
I was the spokesmen for all legal and financial restructuring for this project.

Mergers and acquisitions
During the lifecycle of Blueprint Consulting we were a takeover candidate for several large system integrators. I was one of the spokesmen for Blueprint Consulting in that process. Together with our merger and acquisitions advisors “Wertheim and partners” I was involved in several meetings. Also, we have drawn up an “information memorandum” for Blueprint Consulting to present the company to potential buyers. Although these discussions lead to negotiations on the “Letter of Intent” for one of the parties the bad market situation in Q2 and Q3 of 2001 was a deal breaker for the short term.

Respect
In my humble opinion this is one of the most important elements of life. There is no way of working together as a team if this element is lacking. This team can be thought of as friends, colleagues or any other relationship between two or more people. Team effort will greatly improve when respect is grown as the foundation amongst the members of the team.

Team effort
Most successes are based on team effort. When working in a team there is no room for individual glory. People can be rewarded individually for what they have done for the team however. This can inspire others to do the same.

Loyalty
Is what I give to and expect from anyone that I am working with.


Having fun
Work is not your average 40 hours a week thing anymore. Working in a team and getting the best out of yourself and your team is a very rewarding job. It is best achieved with a group of people that, of course next to simple hard working, find time to share another great factor of life called humor.
